Enrolling in Benefits

All active, regular full-time employees scheduled to work at least 30 hours per week, and variable shift employees working at least 16 hours per week, are eligible for benefits. Coverage begins on the Friday of the employee’s first paycheck, even if the paycheck is issued earlier due to a holiday. Enrollment in the County Health Plan is mandatory for eligible employees. Opting out of this coverage is not permitted.

Eligible Dependents

You may choose to enroll your eligible dependents in the County Health Plan; however, dependent coverage is optional. You are not required to enroll them in all available benefit options—medical, dental, and vision. For example, you may elect to enroll your dependents in vision coverage only, while opting out of medical and dental coverage, or choose any combination that best suits your family’s needs.

You may also enroll your eligible dependents in medical, dental, and/or vision coverage, including the following:

    • Your legal spouse or qualified domestic partner
    • Children under the age of 26, regardless of student, dependency or marital status
    • Children who are past the age of 26 and are fully dependent on you for support due to a mental or physical disability and who are indicated as such on your federal tax return

If you have questions or want to make a Qualified Life Event change, contact Human Resources Benefits.

    Making Changes After Open Enrollment

During Open Enrollment, you can make changes to your health plan. Medical Open Enrollment is annual. Dental and Vision Open Enrollment is once every three years.

After Open Enrollment, you cannot make changes to your benefits during the year unless you have a Qualified Life Event. If you do not have a Qualified Life Event you will have to wait until the next Open Enrollment period to make changes.

Employees have 31 days to make changes to their health plan following a Qualified Life Event. To initiate a Qualified Life Event change, please contact Human Resources Benefits.

    Common Qualified Life Events Include

    • Marriage
